He was the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee and a leader of the Dalit and minority rights movement in India. He also served as the first Law Minister of Independent India.
He was also the first untouchable to have entered Elphinstone College which was affiliated with the University of Bombay. Throughout his life, he worked for the upliftment of the Dalit community.
