Narak Chaturdashi 2025, also known as Choti Diwali or Kali Chaudas, is one of the most spiritually powerful days in the Diwali festival week. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, and good over evil. On this day, devotees honor Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura and perform rituals for purification, protection, and prosperity.

This festival prepares devotees for the grand celebration of Diwali, which falls the next day.

According to Hindu scriptures, the demon king Narakasura, ruler of Pragjyotishpur, became arrogant after obtaining immense power. He captured thousands of women and caused chaos in all realms.
Lord Krishna, along with Goddess Satyabhama, defeated and killed Narakasura on the Chaturdashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. Before dying, Narakasura requested that his death be celebrated as a day of joy and freedom — thus marking the birth of Narak Chaturdashi.
In some traditions, the day is also dedicated to Goddess Kali, who destroyed the demon Raktabija. Hence, it is also known as Kali Chaudas in Gujarat and Western India.
| Region | Celebration Name | Key Rituals |
|---|---|---|
| North India | Choti Diwali | Lighting diyas, exchanging sweets |
| Maharashtra | Narak Chaturdashi | Abhyang Snan, oil massage, early morning bath |
| Gujarat | Kali Chaudas | Worship of Goddess Kali for protection |
| South India | Deepavali (Main Day) | Fireworks and evening puja of Krishna |
Narak Chaturdashi today is not only about rituals but also about mental well-being and positivity. Lighting diyas signifies spreading hope and compassion. People clean their homes, declutter their spaces, and focus on letting go of negative thoughts — making space for new beginnings.
Narak Chaturdashi 2025 reminds us that every soul has the power to overcome darkness. Whether through prayer, cleanliness, or inner reflection, this day encourages self-purification and spiritual growth.
As diyas illuminate the night, let’s remember the true essence of this festival — the eternal triumph of light, goodness, and truth.
