The Legend and History Behind Narak Chaturdashi

According to Hindu scriptures, the demon king Narakasura, ruler of Pragjyotishpur, became arrogant after obtaining immense power. He captured thousands of women and caused chaos in all realms.
Lord Krishna, along with Goddess Satyabhama, defeated and killed Narakasura on the Chaturdashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. Before dying, Narakasura requested that his death be celebrated as a day of joy and freedom — thus marking the birth of Narak Chaturdashi.

In some traditions, the day is also dedicated to Goddess Kali, who destroyed the demon Raktabija. Hence, it is also known as Kali Chaudas in Gujarat and Western India.

Spiritual Significance of Narak Chaturdashi

  1. Victory of Good Over Evil: Symbolizes the triumph of righteousness and courage.
  2. Spiritual Cleansing: Taking an early morning holy bath (Abhyang Snan) removes negativity and impurities.
  3. Preparation for Diwali: The festival marks mental and spiritual readiness for welcoming Goddess Lakshmi the next day.
  4. Inner Purification: Encourages individuals to conquer internal demons — ego, anger, jealousy, and greed.
