National Productivity Day Significance

National Productivity Day is observed in India every year on 12 February. The day is part of the National Productivity Week organized by the by the National Productivity Council (NPC), and is observed from February 12 to 18 annually. The purpose of observing both National Productivity Day and National Productivity Week is to draw everybody’s focus on increasing quality, efficiency and competitiveness levels in various sectors of the country’s economy and help India emerge as a global leader. In addition to this, the day also promotes the idea of productivity as an “evolving concept”, which only not focus on increasing production but also take into account issues related to the environment, quality, human resource development and so on. National Productivity Day also aims to highlight the things that can be done to increase the efficiency of the country’s productivity and create a more comprehensive and sustainable model of socioeconomic development.

National Productivity Council

The National Productivity Council (NPC) was established in 1958 as an autonomous organization to conduct productivity research in the country. The council comes under the Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (India), Government of India. The NPC also provides consulting and training services to the government, public and private sector organizations. From Industrial Engineering, Agri-Business, Economic Services, Quality Management, Human Resources Management to Information Technology, Technology Management, Energy Management and Environmental Management, NPC has contributed to the development of every major economic sector in the country and continues to do so.

History of National Productivity Day

It was on February 12, 1958, the National Productivity Council of India got Registered under Societies Registration Act XXI, 1860. To mark the establishment of the council, its members decided to observe National Productivity Day every year on the same day. So, apart from encouraging people to be more productive in their work, the National Productivity Day also celebrates the anniversary of establishment of National Productivity Council.

Theme for National Productivity Day Observation

Every year, a theme is decided by the National Productivity Council and the observation of National Productivity revolves around the given theme. For last year observation, the theme was “Self Reliance Through Productivity.”

The theme for National Productivity Day 2023 is “Productivity, Green Growth, and Sustainability: Celebrating India’s G20 Presidency”.
