Srinivasa Ramanujan FRS was an Indian mathematician considered one of the greatest not just in India but all over the world. Without any formal training in mathematics Ramanujan was able to make crucial contributions to number theory, mathematical analysis, continued fractions, and infinite series. He is also credited with the solutions to many mathematical problems that were once considered unsolvable. During his short life, Ramanujan compiled nearly 3,900 results on his own including the Ramanujan prime, the Ramanujan theta function, partition formulae, and mock theta functions. Ramanujan was diagnosed with tuberculosis and a severe vitamin deficiency and in 1919, he returned to Madras Presidency where he died one year later. Although Ramanujan was only 32 years old at the time, he had already made his name in history as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time.
National Mathematics Day was introduced on 26 December 2011 by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh at Madras University to mark the 125th birth anniversary of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Thus, the first National Mathematics Day was held on December 22, 2012, and has been observed every year since then.
National Mathematics Day in India is celebrated every year with various educational events held all across the country. Schools and universities throughout the country organize different quizzes, puzzle games, seminars, workshops, etc. related to mathematics. In 2017, on the occasion of National Mathematics Day, the Ramanujan Math Park was opened in Kuppam, in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. Individuals can take this day as an opportunity to learn the glorious history and contribution of Ramanujan and other great mathematicians of India. You can watch movies, read books, and encourage others, especially children, to learn more about this day and its significance.
