World Stroke Day 2023 Theme “Precioustime” (in 2022)
Stroke is considered as a widespread health issue all over the world and currently is the single largest cause of disability and the second largest cause of death globally. Taking the seriousness of the strokes in account, their frequency and how less people know about it, it was deemed necessary to observe a day of awareness regarding stroke and its prevention.
With this view in mind, every year World Stroke Day is celebrated on October 29.
World Stroke Day was established in 2004 by the World Stroke Organization at the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada. The idea of observing the day was presented by Dr. Vladimir Hachinski and October 29 was chosen as the day of celebration.
Dr. Hachinski also created a working group which was incorporated into a World Stroke Proclamation in October 2006. In 2006, the International Stroke Society and the World Stroke Federation merged to form the World Stroke Organization and it took over the management of World Stroke Day. The first World Stroke Day was observed on October 29, 2004. celebrities such as Indian Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, former Miss Egypt Dalia El Behery and cyclist Alberto Contador are goodwill ambassadors of World Stroke Campaign.
World Stroke Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the serious nature and high rates of stroke. It is also a platform for the WSD advocates to come together and talk about about the ways in which the burden of stroke can be reduced through better public awareness. Many organizations at global, regional and national levels conduct events and activities to illuminate people about stroke prevention amd access to acute treatment. The World Stroke Organization also runs a campaign every year for the cause and also work towards support for stroke survivors and caregivers.
Anyone interested can join and support the campaign with the help of WSO toolkit that provides all the information and resources required. Organizations seeking to advance stroke policy, elevate the issue of stroke to improve stroke awareness, prevention, treatment and support by driving change through governments and institutions can use these toolkit and resources too.
The #Precioustime campaign of World Stroke Organization aimed to raise awareness of stroke signs and the benefits of timely access to emergency medical care. The campaign was started last year only for observing the World Stroke Day.
