National Epilepsy Day 2023: National Epilepsy Day is celebrated on 17 November to make people aware of epilepsy disease, how is it caused, and possible treatment.


National Epilepsy Day 2023: The day is observed on November 17 to raise awareness about epilepsy. It is a chronic disorder of the brain which is characterized by recurrent 'seizures' or 'fits'.  

Or we can say that Epilepsy is a chronic non-communicable disease of the brain that affects people of all ages. Around 50 million people across the world have epilepsy and so is one of the most common neurological diseases across the world.

In India, National Epilepsy Day is celebrated by the Epilepsy Foundation. On this day various seminars, debates, stage events, etc. are organized to educate people about epilepsy disease and its treatment methods. On this day, various hospitals also provide free treatment and organize consultation camps for patients.

The theme of National Epilepsy Awareness Month (NEAM) 2022 is "There is no NEAM without ME," according to the Epilepsy Foundation.

History

There are an estimated 50 million epileptics worldwide, 80% of whom live in developing countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In an effort to reduce the prevalence of epilepsy in India, the Epilepsy Foundation of India established National Epilepsy Day. The non-profit Epilepsy Foundation of India's goal is to change societal attitudes toward epilepsy and to enhance the quality of life for people who experience seizures.

Significance

The purpose of National Epilepsy Day is to increase public understanding of epilepsy. National Epilepsy Day will be observed in 2022 by a number of governmental and non-governmental organizations to increase public awareness of the causes and symptoms of epilepsy. The purpose of National Epilepsy Awareness Day in India is to assist those in need who are unable to pay for the medication required to treat this neurological condition. The foundation works to identify potential epilepsy treatments and cures and hosts annual awareness campaigns to raise public awareness, enhance care, and lessen the burden of the disease.
