Mole Day is an annual event held every year on October 23 from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm. The day commemorates the Avogadro’s Number that has a value of 6.02 x 10²³ and this value is equal to one mole. The number is a basic but important measuring unit in chemistry used for calculating number of large entities like atoms and molecules. To increase the interest of children in studying Chemistry, Mole Day was established by the National Mole Day Foundation (NMDF).

What is Mole?
Mole is a standard unit of measurement used to calculate large quantities of very small entities such as atoms, molecules, etc. The mole designates an extremely large number of units, 6.02214076 × 10^23, also known as the Avogadro’s number. For a given molecule, one mole is a mass in grams whose number is equal to the molar mass of the molecule. Understanding this in terms of water molecules, it has a molar mass of 18 which means that the weight of one mole of water is 18 grams. Now generalizing this, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro’s Number of molecules or atoms of that substance.
Significance of Mole Day
The day holds an important value to chemists, chemistry students and chemistry enthusiasts. Mole Day is observed on October 23 between 6:02 am and 6:02 pm thus making the date appear like 6.02 10/23 which represents the Avogadro’s number. Avogadro number has a value of 6.02×10^23 and defines the number of particles (atoms or molecules) in one mole (mol) of substance. History of Mole Day Observation
The first mention of Mole Day originated in an article in The Science Teacher in the early 1980s. Inspired by this article, a high school chemistry teacher named Maurice Oehler from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, founded the National Mole Day Foundation (NMDF) on May 15, 1991. The National Mole Day Foundation was a non-profit organization made mainly from current and former chemistry teachers, technicians and enthusiasts. The main goal of the foundation was to spark enthusiasm in students, teachers, and chemistry enthusiasts alike. The foundation declared the celebration of Mole Day on October 23 from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm as it represents the Avogadro’s Number. The first Mole Day was celebrated on October 23, 1991.
How is Mole Day celebrated?
Many high schools around the United States, South Africa, Australia, and Canada celebrate Mole Day as a way to get their students interested in chemistry, with various activities often related to chemistry or moles. The National Mole Day Foundation select a yearly theme for mole day (from submissions) with an accompanying song and artwork. The foundation also provides classroom resources for teachers, highlights student and teacher work and financially supports teachers for professional development and mole day celebrations.
Chemistry teachers are encouraged to sign up their classes to compete in the Molympics. Molympics is a free event designed by several devoted Chemistry teachers who developed laboratory activities involving skills such as estimation, measurement, dimensional analysis and problem solving.
