As per the Gregorian calendar, Guru Nanak birth anniversary falls on 15 April every year but Guru Nanak Jayanti is observed as per the Hindu lunar calendar. According to Hindu calendar, Guru Nanak was born on the Purnima (full moon day) of Kartik month that normally falls in the month of October or November in Gregorian calendar. In the upcoming year 2023, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated on 27th of November, Monday.

Many Indian states including Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal observe Guru Nanak Jayanti as a public holiday. Banks, schools and public offices remain close on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Most private offices, shops, stores and some other facilities might also remain off on the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Guru Nanak- Life History & Achievements

Guru Nanak was born on 15 April 1469 and was the founder of Sikhism religion. He also became the first of the ten Sikh Gurus and was succeeded by Guru Angad. It is believed that right from his birth was blessed with divine grace and there were many events that happened during his lifetime that was a proof of this. Nanak believed in one god or ik onkar, as he said, and that it was the only eternal truth.

He traveled the Asian continent preaching and teaching people about equality, fraternal love, goodness and virtue. It is said that when Guru Nanak died at the age of 70, his dead body was not found anywhere. Instead of Nanak’s body, his followers found a heap of flowers tugged in the white sheet where his body was supposed to be.

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2023 Celebration

Two days before Guru Nanak Jayanti, Akhand Path is held in the Gurdwaras which is a forty-eight-hour non-stop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs. One day before the festival a procession called as Nagar kirtan is carried out by the Panj Pyaras. A palanquin holding Sikh Flag and followed by hundred of devotees is carried from the Gurudwaras through the street.

Celebrations on the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti commence with early morning procession called as Prabhat Pheri. The processions begins from Gurudwaras and are carried out in the streets with hymns and devotional songs played by the devotees as they carry out the procession. Before the procession starts, Asaa-Ki-Vaar is sung in the Gurudwaras as early as four or five o’clock in the morning. This time period is called as Amrit Vela and is followed by katha and kirtan sung in the praise of Guru Nanak. Processions are carried out and after that langars (community lunch) are arranged in Gurudwara. Any hungry person, irrespective of their status, gender, caste, class, color or creed, are free to come and eat the Langar.

Night prayer sessions are also carried out in some Gurudwaras on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. The prayers begin after sunset with recitation of Rehras (evening prayer) and is followed by Kirtan that continues till late at night. Devotees in the Gurudwaras start singing Gurbani at about 1:20 am, which is believed as the actual time of birth of Guru Nanak. The whole celebrations of Guru Nanak Jayanti finishes at around 2 o’clock in the morning.

On the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti in the year 2019 that marked his 550th birth anniversary, the Punjab government announced that it will install chairs dedicated to Guru Nanak in 11 universities.
