World Environmental Health Day 2023 Significance

As per a report from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 12.6 million deaths are caused every year due to global environmental issues such as soil pollution, water contamination, chemical exposure, ultraviolet radiation, and biodiversity loss.  Not only this, over a hundred illnesses and injuries can be directly connected to environmental health concerns. These issues have more impact on that are poor communities that already have significant healthcare vulnerabilities. The WHO also estimates that 23 per cent of all deaths are linked to environmental risks which means there is an urgent need to focus on these problems and find their solutions. With this very point in mind, World Environmental Health Day is observed every year on 26 September.

History of World Environmental Health Day

World Environmental Health Day was launched on 26 September 2011 by the International Federation of Environmental Health Council at its meeting in Indonesia. To celebrate the inaugural event, students from the University of Indonesia composed and arranged a wonderful hymn. The day was established to mobilize global efforts towards environmental health, a branch of public health aiming to protect human health by improving the environment’s well-being.

International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH)

The International Federation of Environmental Health is a federation of different nations  that represents the interests of environmental health professionals all over the world. The organization was established in 1986 and is based in London, England. National Environmental Health organizations from more than 40 countries are full members of IFEH with many other associate members. The IFEH acts as a focal point for countries and organizations concerned with the protection of the environment in the interests of human health.
