International Day of the Girl Child 2023: Date, Theme & Celebration

International Day of the Girl Child is a day of annual observance celebrated worldwide on October 11. The day was adopted by the United Nations and aims to raise awareness of gender inequality, child marriage, education deprivation and other sensitive issues faced by girls due to their gender. Also known as Day of Girls and the International Day of the Girl, the first International Day of the Girl Child was observed in 2012. The year 2023 will mark the 11th anniversary celebration of IDG.

Significance of International Day of the Girl Child 2023

Women all around the world are the victims of certain issues and abuse such as denial to education, nutrition, legal rights and medical care, discrimination, violence and forced child marriage. Observation of International Day of the Girl Child supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness worldwide based upon their gender. But if given the right platform and opportunities, the girls can bring positive changes in the society making it stronger than before.

The time to stand with and for girlsand to invest in a future that believes in their a potential is now. With this in mind, the International Day of the Girl Child 2023 will be celebrated.

History of International Day of the Girl Child 2023

the first step towards empowerment of women was taken at the World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. many countries unanimously adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was a blueprint to the principles concerning the equality of men and women.

Following the success of this declaration, a proposal to observe International Day of Girl Child was put forth in the 55th United Nations General Assembly. Rona Ambrose, the Minister for the Status of Women of Canada, sponsored the resolution and a group of women and girls created presentations to support the initiative on the Status of Women. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly finally adopted the Resolution 66/170 and declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. The aim to establish the day was to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. The first International Day of the Girl Child was observed on October 11 2012 and focused attention on the challenges girls face and promoted empowerment of girls and the fulfillment of their human rights.

Every year the United Nations observe the International Day of the Girl Child with a theme and the celebrations are carried out all around the world. Our time is now—our rights, our future is the future for this year’s celebration. There are many ways to celebrate this day such as organizing programs and events that promote awareness of the condition of women in the country and offers insights on how to fix it.
