Every year, September 15 is observed as Engineer’s Day to honor the hard work and efforts that engineer put in to make our daily lives easier. This day also commemorates the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya who is considered as one of the greatest engineers of India. Apart from being a great engineer,  Visvesvaraya was also the Diwan of Mysore, from 1912 to 1919. It is in his honor that his birth anniversary began to be celebrated as National Engineer’s Day all across the country.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Personal Life & Achievements

In India, Engineer’s Day is a day dedicated to all the engineers who with their skills and knowledge shape the country. This day is observed as a tribute to Sir M Visvesvaraya, or Sir MV, who was born on the same date, i.e., 15 September in the year 1860. Visvesvaraya obtained his degree in civil engineering from the College of Engineering, Pune, which is one of the oldest engineering colleges in Asia.

When he was the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1919, he totally changed the maps of the kingdom by building numerous factories, industries and educational institutes.

For his contribution towards the development of Mysore, he was awarded the title of Father of Modern Mysore State.

Famous works of Sir M Visvesvaraya include the development of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysuru (his most prominent work), implementation of irrigation system in the Deccan Plateau, construction of flood protection system for city of Hyderabad, development of a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion and much more.

During the period he served as the Diwan of Mysore, he founded the State Bank of Mysore, Mysore Iron and Steel Works, Government Engineering College, Mysore Soap Factory, Bangalore Agricultural University and many other industries. Apart from this, there are many major projects like damns, irrigation systems, flood protection system and bridges that were built on the concepts provided by this great engineer.

There is no doubt that M Visvesvaraya is of one of the greatest engineers of India. At the same time, he is also one of the best engineers the world has ever seen. As a tribute to this great engineer of the country, it was decided that every year his birth anniversary will be observed as National Engineer’s Day. Thus, 15 September began to be celebrated as Engineer’s Day all around the country.

This day is dedicated to all the engineers of the country and honors them for their contributions in the development of society. Other than India, 15 September is celebrated as National Engineer’s Day in Sri Lanka and Tanzania also.

Engineer’s Day 2023 Celebrations

Engineer’s Day is celebrated in the memory of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya who is considered as one of the greatest engineers of all time. Although there is no holiday on this occasion, but people still celebrate this day with great excitement. At the birthplace of Sir MV,  Muddenahalli, a memorial is held every year on 15 September that shows-off the awards and titles won by Sir MV.

Other than this, his personal belongings like living room, spectacles, cups, books, etc are put on a display too. A tribute is paid to Sir Visvesvaraya by the senior ministers of the nation on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
